Yucaipa Stake Blood Drive

REMINDER --

MAY 23rd IS OUR YUCAIPA STAKE BLOOD DRIVE

Volunteer blood donors are needed for surgery and trauma patients, transplant recipients, premature infants, cancer patients, etc. To meet emergency and ongoing patient need, the LifeStream Blood Bank must receive at least 500 donations daily in order to support 175, 000 transfusions annually. LifeStream supplies the necessary blood for most all the hospitals in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

One of these emergency and ongoing patients may be one of our ward members or one of your family members. For example, George Cummings needed an emergency surgery in February, Albert Field had heart surgery in March, the part of March, Becky Foster had hip surgery in April. Three additional members of our ward are having surgery in May, and another waiting for a date. We do not know who and when our family members may need your precious donation of a gift of life. May I thank those who have donated previously. Please sign up and commit to donating Saturday, May 23rd. Bring your neighbors. Thank you.

Women's Self Defense Night A Success!

A big THANK YOU to Lee Merrill for a fantastic class last night! It was such a "kick" to see all the feisty ladies in our ward get their attack on!

Lee taught us wonderful techniques to get out of different kinds of attacks...
*If you are grabbed by the arm
*If you are grabbed by the throat
*If you are being pushed
*If you are attacked from behind and someone is trying to pick you up and throw you in a car
*He even gave us tips for our kids if they are being grabbed
**One rule of thumb we learned*
*NEVER, NEVER get inside someone else's car and let them take you anywhere! If they threaten to shoot you...let them shoot you!You have a better chance of survival to get shot in a parking lot where others can come to your aid and receive medical attention, then to be taken to a different location, then being shot and dumped out in nowhere!Scary but true!
Also...try to avoid going shopping or running errands alone at night,we are easy targets!

There will be another Self Defense Night soon so get ready to join us next time!

Spiritual Thought

From this past Sunday's lesson given by Sister Calder!

We as women and as mothers have a sacred duty to be teachers within our homes.

Robert D. Hales said; "Motherhood is above all a teaching task."How do we prepare for such an important responsibility?

*We need to recommit ourselves to the study of the scriptures
*We need to "liken" the scriptures in our lives and then in the lives of our children
*We need to improve the quality, not the quantity of our study

This will help strengthen us to be ready for those "teaching" moments.

Remember the following...
*Have faith
*Get on bended knee
*Open your scriptures
*Study them
*The answers will come
*The Spirit will guide
*A Night of Family Traditions*
Wed. June 3rd @ 6:30pm
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
If you are interested in sharing any holiday/family traditions with us and decorating a room for the night, please sign-up at church.
*You can team up with someone else OR*You can have one person be in charge of decorations, the other share ideas.
Responsibilities: You are in charge of decorating your own room, sharing several ideas with us, and having something there for us to sample. You don't have to decorate the whole room...you can just decorate around a table...you can do as little or as much as you want!*
*If you don't have any ideas or traditions to share from your own family...research some, and share what you like!
For example…Valentine’s Day Room: one idea you share is that you make heart-shaped sugar cookies and deliver them to a different family each year that you love. You would then have a small sample for all us to try.
*Everyone will be rotating rooms, so your presentation would last 3 minutes at the most.*

Don't forget to get an index card to write down a favorite holiday/family tradition, recipe, tip, or trick of the trade. Look for the cards on the RS Table.
*If you already took an index card home...remember to bring them back by May 17th!*
*
We are putting together some fun booklets that will be at your fingertips

Mommy and Me Playgroup This Wednesday!

Playgroup has park day 10-11am at the park in Seneca Springs (by Kohls), Wednesday, May 6.Every other Wed. this month will be at the Wildflower Park in Sundance, same time.

Recipe of the Week-Bundt Cake

Bundt Cake

Beat together:
1 pkg. yellow cake mix (no pudding in the mix)
1 large pkg. vanilla instant pudding
¾ cup oil
¾ cup water

Add:
4 eggs
1 tsp. butter flavoring1 tsp. vanilla
Beat 6-8 minutes. (Very important).

Grease bundt pan well (Pam). Pour batter in alternate layers with nut/sugar mixture (see below) starting with batter first and ending with batter.

¼ cup sugar
1 Tbl. plus 1 tsp. cinnamon
finely chopped pecans or walnuts

Bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Let set in pan 15 minutes. Invert onto serving platter. Put strips of waxed paper under edges of cake to catch extra glaze.

When cool, glaze with mixture of:
¾ cup powdered sugar
½ tsp. butter flavoring
½ tsp. vanilla
2-3 Tbl. milk
Remove wax paper strips.

Notes:
Very moist. Unlike most bundt cakes. We love the nuts and cinnamon.
