Prophets of God

"We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet" How thankful we ought to be, how thankful we are, for a prophet to counsel us in words of divine wisdom as we walk our paths in these complex and difficult times. We have a prophet living on the earth today. President Monson is the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has the right to revelation for the entire Church. He has the authority to direct the entire Church and kingdom of God on earth. No person except President Monson can receive God's will for the entire membership of the Church.

President Monson said " The sweetest experience I know in life is to feel a prompting and act upon it and later find out that it was the fulfillment of someone's prayer or someone's need. And I always want the Lord to Know that if He needs an errand run, Tom Monson will run that errand for him."

We would do well today to heed the words spoken anciently by Jehoshaphat: "Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper." (2 Chr. 20:20)

Enjoying the long-lost blessings of visiting teaching

My life has been in something of a transition phase for the past year, and one of the casualties of switching wards and moving states has been some lag time in getting fully integrated into my new Mormon congregations. Formal callings -- you know, the kind where they actually read your name over the pulpit and ask for a sustaining vote -- never take too long to show up, but getting involved in a new ward's home- and visiting-teaching programs seems to be a much slower process.

At least that's been the case for me, and the result was that I passed most of 2009 without ever making it onto anybody's assignment sheet, and without receiving any assignment myself. I don't say that to cast blame about; when I started attending a family ward in Chicago at the beginning of 2009, they knew I was short-term, so to speak; I was applying for graduate school and was fairly certain that it would take me out of state.

Then, when I moved to Massachusetts last fall I started attending a ward that was brand-new and still in the process of finding its bearings. And, frankly, I'm sure that if at any point last year I'd gone to my Relief Society president and demanded instant inclusion in the visiting teaching program, I could have at least gotten my own assignment. After all, service works both ways, and to my mind so does accountability for assignments like these -- at least a little bit.

No, my point in bringing all this up is to say that when I finally saw my name on that visiting teaching spreadsheet in December -- both as a teacher and as a teachee -- my heart leaped. I'd had inklings throughout the year of how much I'd missed that inclusion, but I don't think it really settled in until I saw the names of the women who had been given a degree of stewardship over me, and I saw the names of the sisters who were now officially in my care.

I didn't realize how much I'd missed knowing there was someone who would certainly take note if I failed to show up at church one week, and whom I could count on to stop by my home on a regular basis with an uplifting thought and genuine interest in my life.

That's all despite the fact that by the time those assignments were made, I already had made friends in my new ward who would noticed if I were missing one week, and who knew at least some of the particulars of my life and schedule. It wasn't that I didn't have anyone to look out for me, and thus desperately needed someone to be assigned to do so -- I just needed visiting teachers.

See, when my visiting teachers visit me in my home or check in on me during the week, it feels different to me than when a friend does so. To me, those women doing that work are standing in for the Savior, and their love carries the spirit of his love -- and I can feel the difference. I feel it when they come to my door, and I feel it when I consider and pray for the sisters in my care.

I know there are plenty of people who feel differently -- women who decry the visiting teaching program as phony friendship, or who feel like an item to be checked off a to-do list whenever their visiting teachers come to visit. And I know there are situations and circumstances where the program can indeed feel that way. But I also know it can -- and should -- be so much more than that.

During my time as a Relief Society president in Chicago, there was nothing I was more grateful for than the sisters in my branch who took the time to be diligent visiting teachers -- who knew the women they visited as friends, and who understood the importance of sharing spiritual things with them and being in tune with their needs and well-being. As much as I wanted every sister in my branch to have that kind of care, it wasn't something I could do by myself. We all needed everyone to do her part.

Those kinds of relationships are what visiting teaching is all about, and not only does everyone deserve to have them, I believe everyone needs them, too. I'm not there yet, of course; as much as visiting teaching assignments put us on the path to those kinds of friendships -- and the spirit of the work most certainly facilitates their creation -- it still takes time and work. And it most certainly takes love.

Speaking as someone who spent a year without the opportunity to do that work, I can attest that the simple calling of visiting teaching -- so simple we often don't even think of it as a calling -- is perhaps among the most powerful responsibilities we can assume in the church, and one of its sweetest blessings.

They say that sometimes you have to lose something to realize how much you needed it. Well, lesson learned. From now on, I think I'd rather understand its importance by embracing it.

Ward Conference Lesson from President Miskin

President Miskin taught our combined Priesthood/Relief Society Lesson this past Sunday. His lesson centered on Isaiah 58 verses 3,6-7,8-11. We learned all about the fast (and what is required) and the amazing blessings associated with the fast. Fasting can help us to "Loose the Bands of Wickedness", "Undo a Heavy Burden", and bring us health, light, and a great protection. Check out the verses to find out more.

"The Holy Ghost"

Experiences of prompting and prayer are not uncommon in the Church. They are part of the revelation our Heavenly Father has provided for us. The Holy Ghost is member of the Godhead. He is a "personage of Spirit". He can be only in one place at a time, but His influence can be everywhere at the same time.

The mission of the Holy Ghost is to bear witness of the Father and the Son and of the truth of all things.
The prophets of the Lord have promised, "By the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things" (Moroni 10:5).

President Joseph Fielding Smith said:
"When a man has the manifestation from the Holy Ghost, it leaves an indelible impression on his soul, one that is not easily erased. It is Spirit speaking to spirit, and it comes with convincing force. A manifestation of an angel, or even of the Son of God himself, would impress the eye and mind, and eventually become dimmed, but the impressions of the Holy Ghost sink deeper into the soul and are more difficult to erase".

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we should make ourselves worthy to receive this special messenger and witness of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

God prepared this earth as a home for His children. Adam and Eve were chosen to be the first people to live on the earth. Their part in our Father’s plan was to bring mortality into the world. They were to be the first parents.

Some people believe Adam and Eve committed a serious sin when they ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, latter-day scriptures help us understand that their Fall was a necessary step in the plan of life and a great blessing to all of us. Because of the Fall, we are blessed with physical bodies, the right to choose between good and evil, and the opportunity to gain eternal life. None of the privileges would have been ours had Adam and Eve remained in the garden.

After the Fall, Eve said, “Were it not for our transgression we never should have had seed (children), and never should have known good and evil, and the joy of our redemption, and the eternal life which God giveth unto all the obedient”.

“Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy” (2 Nephi 2:22-25)

Kira Svetlana McDonald!!!

They granted our adoption, (admit it, you guys were all worried) so she is now our little girl!!

They could not, however, waive the 10 day waiting period. So Chris will return to CA to take care of Maddie & Aislyn waiting at home, while I stay here and get to know Kira better.

The director at her orphanage said that we can come tomorrow and bring Kira here to our hotel while we wait the 10 days since it's a 4 hour round trip drive to see her AND to try and keep her from getting sick again from the other kiddos there.

She is still around 11 lbs ( about the size of a 3 month old), but even though she does not sit yet, she is close to scooting ( yay, a mobile baby :).

She laughs a lot more, but will need to get used to close contact since she is more used to being by herself.

So, there you have it.... Our new girl.

By the time I get home with her, it will have been 2years since started our journey....With a big happy ending!!!

H1N1 Vaccine

Ladies-The H1N1 (Swine Flu) vaccine is in town! Beaver Medical does NOT have it yet. However, the Family Care Clinic in Banning (and possibly other places that are Riverside County sponsored) just received the vaccine last Thursday. I had Alexander get the nasal spray this morning, and I got the shot. We were lucky- there was no wait and the immunizations were free. I just filled out a couple forms for each of us and then we were helped right away. No appt needed. The Clinic is located off the 10 frwy on Ramsey St (near Sunset) next to Smart and Final.
The H1N1 flu vaccine is just for high risk people at this point due to limited avail: kids age 2yr-24, pregnant women, people with chronic health problems, people with kids under 6 months of age, (see govt website for complete list). This was not very well advertised, so I thought you all might want to be informed!

The food is ordered online by a certain date and then is delivered at the end of every month to a local location. In Yucaipa, it is delivered to the Lutheran Church at 34215 Avenue E, Yucaipa. I looked at the website and it looks legitimate. I thought it would be worthwhile to send to you. Please share the information as you feel inspired. What Is My Responsibility to the Rising Generation?

Maxwell (1926–2004) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "Reserved by the Lord for this time, [the rising generation] must now be preserved . . . and prepared for their special moment in human history! They have been held back to come forth at this time, but now they need to be pushed forward to meet their rendezvous. . .

"Youth are not unlike prospective converts. There are those critical moments when their souls begin to tilt—toward the Lord or away from Him. These moments of decision cannot always be created, but when they occur, they must not be wasted. What a fun night we had with our Crafter Lady Emily!We got to see an array of fun craft ideas that we can do with our kids and grandkids.Emily even printed out "50 Fun Craft Ideas" for us too...WoW!We then put together "I'm Bored Jars." Anytime we hear our kids or grandkids say that they are bored, they grab an idea out of the jar for something new to do! Brilliant!Thanks Emily for working so hard to try and make us all crafty too!!!!

Freezer Meals!

Thanks to Ginny Babbitt for putting together a wonderful Sat morning for us ladies!
We put together a freezer meal...yummy lasagna for our families and it was easy too!
We went home to put it in our freezer and when we are ready to use it, we pull it out in the morning to thaw, and then pop it in the oven to cook! They turned out so yummy...an instant hit in our home!
Ginny even put together other yummy recipes, and tips for making freezer meals.

Here is the Lasagna recipe!

Lasagna Recipe
(for the Freezer):
Makes 1 9"x13" or 2 8"x8" pans.

Sauce: (You'll need 3-4 cups)

32 oz. can crushed tomatoes
14 oz. can tomato paste
2 1/2 cups water
2 tbls grated onion
2 1/2 tsp italian seasoning
1 tsp garlic Powder
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar

Cheese Mixture:
1 cup ricotta cheese
1 cup cottage cheese
2 tbls parmesan cheese
1 tbls parsley flakes
1 tsp salt
1 egg, slightly beaten

Other:
4 cups Mozzarella Cheese
12 Lasagna Noodles , Uncooked *

Mix cheese mixture ingredients. Reserve 1c. mozzarella & sauce for the top. Then, make 3 layers of: sauce, noodles, cheese mixture, & mozzarella, repeated 3 times. Finish with sauce & cheese, making sure all noodles are covered. Wrap tightly, label & freeze.

After thawing, bake at 350 for 45-60 minutes.

*The noodles do not need to be cooked, as long as the lasagna will be frozen.

Sean was more than ready to go to the MTC on Wednesday. He told us that he didn't want to be late the first day he's there. And of course, we wanted to keep him with us as long as we can......just one more hug........ ;) We did the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" when we dropped Sean off at the MTC. When we came to the curb in front of the receiving building, he was greeted by a host missionary who assisted him through the check-in process. Then two happy and friendly missionaries help Sean take his luggage to his residence room. Since the process was so quick, I only took one picture of Sean at the curb site. See attached picture. Sean will be at the Provo MTC for another 2 weeks. He leaves Provo on 8/25 and he'll be at the Guatemala MTC for another 6 weeks. Sean Provo address:

Jam Night

What a fun night! 17 people showed up and had a "berry" good time learning how to make Strawberry Freezer Jam.Kortney was a miniature Rachel Ray in her kitchen who whipped us up some yummy jam and homemade rolls too!We got to take home the recipe and a cute little sample jar.Thanks to everyone for joining-in on our "jam" session!

A big thank you to Ruth Dursteler for teaching a group of 10 sisters how to make 3 types of hair bows!That girl knows her stuff and what a fun turn-out and a fun event!We even got spoiled with some munchies too! Teach these scriptures and quotations or, if needed, another principle that will bless the sisters you visit. Bear testimony of the doctrine. Invite those you visit to share what they have felt and learned.

Why Should I Continually Seek Spiritual and Secular Education?

D&C 93:36–37: "The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth. Light and truth forsake that evil one."

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president: "The Lord has told us that our time should 'be devoted to the studying of the scriptures' (D&C 26:1) and that 'the Book of Mormon and the holy scriptures are given . . . for [our] instruction' (D&C 33:16). Every woman can be a gospel doctrine instructor in her home, and every sister in the Church needs gospel knowledge as a leader and teacher. If you have not already developed the habit of daily scripture study, start now and keep studying in order to be prepared for your responsibilities in this life and in the eternities" ("My Soul Delighteth in the Scriptures," Liahona and Ensign, May 2004, 107–8).

President Thomas S. Monson: "Beyond our study of spiritual matters, secular learning is also essential. . . . I urge you to pursue your education—if you are not already doing so or have not done so—that you might be prepared to provide if circumstances necessitate such.

"Your talents will expand as you study and learn. You will be able to better assist your families in their learning, and you will have peace of mind in knowing that you have prepared yourself for the eventualities that you may encounter in life" ("Three Goals to Guide You," Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2007, 119).

How Can I Be a Lifelong Learner?

President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency: "We will have to make some hard choices of how we use our time. . . . But remember, you are interested in education, not just for mortal life but for eternal life. When you see that reality clearly with spiritual sight, you will put spiritual learning first and yet not slight the secular learning. . . .

" . . . And since what we will need to know is hard to discern, we need the help of heaven to know which of the myriad things we could study we would most wisely learn. It also means that we cannot waste time entertaining ourselves when we have the chance to read or to listen to whatever will help us learn what is true and useful. Insatiable curiosity will be our hallmark" ("Education for Real Life," Ensign, Oct. 2002, 18, 19).

Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "A few of the basic attributes needed to become a lifelong learner are courage, faithful desire, humility, patience, curiosity, and a willingness to communicate and share the knowledge that we gain. . . .

"My dear sisters, don't ever sell yourself short as a woman or as a mother. . . . Do not let the world define, denigrate, or limit your feelings of lifelong learning and the values of motherhood in the home—both here mortally and in the eternal learning and benefits you give to your children and to your companion.

"Lifelong learning is essential to the vitality of the human mind, body, and soul. It enhances self-worth and self-actuation. Lifelong learning is invigorating mentally and is a great defense against aging, depression, and self-doubt" ("The Journey of Lifelong Learning," in Brigham Young University 2008–2009 Speeches [2009], 2, 8–9).

Blood Drive

Please be a good Samaritan by giving a gift of life and hope to one in need. The LifeStream Blood Bank needs over 500 donations of blood each day of the week. LifeStream furnishes the blood for hospitals located in the Inland Empire. For example, Twenty-five-year-old college student, Paul DiLorenzo, was diagnosed with thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder, at the age of one. Paul has received over 2,000 units of blood over his life time and will continue to receive blood every three weeks. Paul and Deena Risch thank you and all who provides them with a gift of life. Deena, a member of the Beaumont Ward, had open heart surgery two weeks ago. We do not know who may need your help tomorrow. It could be a member of your family. Please donate. Place: Redlands Stake Center, 350 Wabash in Redlands, on August 15th

How Can I Prepare for Temple Worship?

Silvia H. Allred, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency: "The temple is the house of the Lord. He directs the conditions under which it may be used, the ordinances that should be administered, and the standards that qualify us to enter. … Personal worthiness is an essential requirement to enjoy the blessings of the temple. We prepare by obeying the commandments and seeking to do God's will" ("Holy Temples, Sacred Covenants," Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2008, 113).

Elder David B. Haight (1906–2004) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "We who would attend the temple must be living in a manner which helps us be worthy to enter and fully partake. … We examine our worthiness to enter the temple in … interviews with priesthood leaders. Our signature, with theirs, on our temple recommend testifies of our worthiness to enter the temple" ("Come to the House of the Lord," Ensign, May 1992, 15).

What Are the Blessings of Qualifying for and Partaking of Temple Worship?

D&C 110:7: "I will manifest myself to my people in mercy in this house."
President Howard W. Hunter (1907–95): "Let us hasten to the temple as frequently as time and means and personal circumstances allow. Let us go not only for our kindred dead, but let us also go for the personal blessing of temple worship, for the sanctity and safety which is provided within those hallowed and consecrated walls. The temple is a place of beauty, it is a place of revelation, it is a place of peace" ("The Great Symbol of Our Membership, " Tambuli, Nov. 1994, 6; Ensign, Oct. 1994, 5).

D&C 38:32: "I will give unto you my law; and there you shall be endowed with power from on high" (see also D&C 95:8).

Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "The temple endowment blessings are as essential for each of us as was our baptism. For this reason we are to prepare ourselves that we may be clean to enter into the temple of God. Temple work is an opportunity to perform our personal endowments and covenants for the living and also perform these same ordinances for the redemption for the dead. It is for this reason we are instructed in the scriptures to build temples and prepare our lives to be worthy to partake of the sacred temple ordinances and covenants. …"
""The primary purpose of the temple is to provide the ordinances necessary for our exaltation in the celestial kingdom. Temple ordinances guide us to our Savior and give us the blessings that come to us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ" ("Temple Blessings," in Brigham Young University 2005-2006 Speeches [2006], 1, 4).

President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008): "Every man or woman who goes to the temple in a spirit of sincerity and faith leaves the house of the Lord a better man or woman. There is need for constant improvement in all of our lives. There is need occasionally to leave the noise and the tumult of the world and step within the walls of a sacred house of God, there to feel His spirit in an environment of holiness and peace" ("Of Missions, Temples, and Stewardship," Ensign, Nov. 1995, 53).
